Quarter 3

  •  Brave New World Animoto

In the novel Brave New World the topic of ethics is combated. Morals, sex, religion, and literature are argued to, which utopia is right and best.
  • Ethics In Brave New World

In the book Brave New World, author Aldous Huxley develops his novel surrounded by ethical issues about sex, religion, and freewill. Huxley has developed characters that have debated these issues. For example the leader of this so called utopia in London Mustapha Mond has created this society to be completely and explicitly open. There is no commitment between sexual partners and is actually frowned upon. To argue against this Huxley has developed a society of people called the "savages". These "savages" believe that it is wrong to have sexual relations with a person if you are not in love and are not married to the person. These characters continue going back and forth arguing about sexual relations.

Huxley talks about freewill with the drug soma. Mond argues that soma is a valuable substance that sustains and promotes happiness. Savages argues against this by saying that you lose apart of yourself and that too much of a good thing is bad for you.The savage shows this toward the end of the novel where one of the characters die from taking too much of it. Also the people in this universe are trained by birth to have a certain job. So freewill seems very biased and controlled in the eyes of the savage. To Mond everywhere you are influenced by your surroundings. Just like the savage was taught all his morals, the citizens in London were also taught their ways. Ethics is all about perspective.

  • Argument Time Write

In the argument essay I wrote about how civil disobedience has been necessary all throughout history. I given examples such as the Boston tea party and Harriet Tubman in the underground railroads.

  • Timeline Project

My position for the timeline was that in my group I helped research British authors for the Victorian era. I will help organize the timeline in the website sutori.

  • Quarter Three Reflection

In this quarter I learned more on the topics of ethics. I liked especially, when we started our debates on somewhat controversial topics. I saw how to properly build a strong argument, when I was one of the judges.I wished we didn't do the reading room since we were already doing the questions for each chapter of Brave New World. I like that in fourth quarter we will no longer do a independent reading anymore. I am happy with the grade I got this quarter and I aspire to continue with my A's in this quarter.
